Dear Doreen,
My Dad came from Bulgaria in the early 1900's to escape being drafted into the Turkish army. Unfortunately, Evanoff was his patronymic, or traditional father's name, and the immigration people simply dropped his real family Koev. I feel this may account for a great many Evanoffs from eastern Europe whose fathers were named Evan, the slavic equivalent of John. Do you have any idea what village he came from? Mine was from Bansko and I have a lot of information about relations there.
Sincerely,
Catherine Wolf
