From Gary Watson's site that I mentioned below, I found the following information. Most of the Eveland families were no longer in the Luzerne area very long after the Revolutionary War, and the county lines changed a lot.Columbia County was formed from land that originally, at one time, had included Luzerne County. There were some Eveland men that came into this Wyoming Valley area of Pennsylvania, probably with some of the New Jersey troops that were assigned to protect the area during the Revolutionary War times.I found the family of Joseph Eveland and Elizabeth Baylor on Gary Watson's site, but there is no John listed with that family. Here is another family that you might be interested in checking out:
Daniel Eveland (Frederich , Johann David , Johannes , Bernhard ) was born 17 Jul 1759 in Woodhouse Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. He died 1843 in Liberty Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
Served in the Revolution. Pension S2198. Lived in Columbia County, Pennsylvania after the war.
The Palatine Families of New York, by Henry Z Jones Jr, 1985.
He had the following children:
196 M i Daniel Eveland was born about 1802 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. 197 M ii John Eveland was born about 1805. 198 F iii Mary Ann Eveland was born 23 Jun 1811. She died 11 Aug 1854. Mary married Peter J Surls on 27 Dec 1832.
Much more research is needed to know whether or not your John Eveland is this guy or somebody else.
I have discovered that some families left behind very few pieces of evidence that prove their existence and proving your connection to a particular family may take years of research through "obscure" bits of evidence. But this makes the journey more interesting.
165. Joseph Eveland (Peter Eveland , Frederich , Johann David , Johannes , Bernhard ) was born 1780 in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
Joseph married Eizabeth Baylor about 1810 in Fishing Creek, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Eizabeth was born about 1790 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.
They had the following children:
+ 494 M i Michael Eveland was born 11 Oct 1812. + 495 M ii Samuel Eveland was born about 1816 and died after 1880. + 496 M iii Josiah Eveland was born 29 Jun 1817. 497 F iv Caleb Eveland was born about 1818 in Fishing Creek, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. + 498 M v Isaiah Eveland was born about 1819. + 499 M vi Nelson B Eveland was born 4 Apr 1823 and died 10 Feb 1899.
No John in this family, according to the materials that Gary has gathered, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he wasn't from this family.
I suggest contacting Gary Watson.I've spoken to him before by phone, as well as by email. He's a good researcher and he should be able to help you also.
Good luck!My impression is that your Evelands descend from these New Jersey men who came into the Wyoming Valley of PA, at the time of the Revolution or soon after.
