The oldest record to date was found for the Fabik family in the area of Sternburg, Moravia. It covers land record that that go back to 1515, 1517 and 1531. These records are for the cities listed as Dubczow and Chabicov. Surnames did not appear in the land records until the land survey of 1546 and 1599. The early records show the given name the same as that shown with the surname and in some cases a reference of father to son. The first reference to Fabik appeared in 1546 as two Fabians 1/2 hide each in wasted city of Dubczow. Then again in 1599 for Chabicov, sons of Martin, sons Martin Fabku and Hawel Fabku both owning half a hide of wasted area field. Then in 1624, the land records show Vitek Fabik (first reference to Fabik) son of Hawel. One must remember that surnames did not become fixed until sometime in 1680 - 1730 depending on location or edict. The Fabik variations for this line extend from 1490 to 1789 and cover Fabian, Fabku, Fabek and Fabik. Throughout the Czech lands Fabik is the surname that remained fixed.
