Joyce,
I believe Ralph to belong to the FAIRBAIRN line Robert FAIRBAIRN & Isabella SIMPSON via their son Robert born abt 1818 at variously:
1851 & 1871 census: Roxburghshire (place unknown)
1861 : Stornoway, Isle of Lewis
1881: "Whitting, Roxburghshire" (which I've not interpreted as yet into a place identifiable to me)
This son Robert was married to Mary THOMSON, and known children (from census data) are (only father Robert was present in the following):
1851 Park Farm, Lochs, ROC: Agnes 7, Alexander 5, Mary 3, Robert J 7 mths (all b Lochs, Ross-shire)
1861 Middlestead, SEL: Isabella 18, Agnes 16, Alexr 14, Mary 12, Robert 10 (all b Stornoway)
1871 Williamslee Hope, Innerleithen, PEE: Mary 24, Robert 20 both shown as born "Danfen, Lanarkshire" according to ancestry's transcriptions, and the most doubtful of all of these identifications, but I've not found any better sightings as yet.
1881 Lyle Townhead, PEE: Mary 31
Robert (c 1818) died at Philipshaugh, Selkirk Parish Jan 1883 (which death cert is where I got his parents and wife from, Mary remains a mystery to me otherwise, as I've not found them in 1841 at all, and presume she died around 1850).
The line down to Ralph Amos is:
Robert m. Isabella SIMPSON
Robert c 1818 m. Mary THOMSON
Robert J c. 1850 m. Isabella MURRAY
Robert Murray c. 1878 m. Mary Ann FINNIE
Ralph Amos c. 1905 m. 1930 Helen Kinnaird HILL
May we know what your connection is to Ralph?
And my perennial question, whether you may know of anyone (male FAIRBAIRN) to represent this line in the DNA project to learn a bit more about where they may fit into the overall scheme of FAIRBAIRN lines?
Regards
Lorna
