I live in Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio.I am researching the home that Linton and Helen Tillotson Fallis lived in at 5362 S. Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio. They lived here from 1935 until about 1948. I have lots of information on them if you are interested. This home that they lived in was built in 1835 and from 1847 to 1887 was owned by the Lathrop family.Records indicate that the Lathrop family were involved in the Underground Railroad and helped fugitive slaves, before the Civil War, escape to Canada. They allowed the slaves to hide in this home until it was safe to move on. I am looking for all information regarding this fact.
An article in the October 1939 Quarterly Bulletin of the Historical Society of Northwestern Ohio, titled: The Underground Railroad Again, says in part ......within a few hundred yards of the Harroun house is another house formerly known as the old Colonial House. This has been recently purchased by Mr. Fallis and handsomely restored to its ancient condition. It, too, was, in the old slave days, a "station" of the railroad and, when the house was remodeled, a concealed room in its cellar (formerly reached by an outside stairway) was discovered, with the beds still in it, where the slaves were hidden until an opportune time came for sending them on to the next "station"........
Linton and Helen Fallis remodeled this home in 1938 according to building permits issued by the Village of Sylvania. While remodeling this home they found this concealed room (with the beds still in it).The remodeling project, when complete, opened this concealed room up to the rest of the basement. It is my belief that they would have taken pictures or documented this "find" in some way.My problem is that Linton Fallis died in 1963 and according to his obituary notice the only survivors were his wife Helen and his son "Edward Hengerer, Jr., of Buffalo" and sister, Mrs. Martha Fallis Oliver of New York City.
Who is Edward Hengerer, Jr. of Buffalo?
His wife Helen died in May of 1981 and according to her obituary notice there were no immediate survivors.
What I am looking for is Edward Hengerer, Jr. of Buffalo, or information regarding who obtained Linton's belongings after he died.
Do you know anything about Mrs. Martha Fallis Oliver of New York City?Anybody I can contact?
One reference said that Linton Fallis had a son Harry David who was born on 8-17-1918.This would have been a son with his first wife Mabel Julia David, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. David.Do you know what happened to his first wife?Did she die or did they divorce?
Any information regarding Linton or Helen Fallis or Linton's son Harry David or foster son Edward Hengerer,Jr., or sister Martha Fallis Oliver, would be helpful.I need to talk to them or their children.
