On a visit to his 97 year old grandfather, my son was able to raid a box of genealogical research that belonged to his grandmother, my former mother-in-law, now deceased. Apparently she was making application to the DAR. In the box were some barely legible handwritten notes with the name of Lodowick Farmer and children and some genealogy books.
Information obtained from this is that Lodowick was b England d 1783 Lunenburg County, VA, his will was executed in 1783, he arrived in VA in 1740, gave up his inherited title of Lord Farmer, he held office in the Virginia Assembly in years 1776 and 1769, wife is unknown and his children were Anne, Dyce, Elijah, Henry, James, Jeremiah, John, Julaney, Lodowick, Sally, Thomas, and Benjamin (1756-1827). If this is correct, Benjamin b 1757 would be my son's 6th great grandfather.
Another name written on the paper was Anne Billop, but I couldn't read it well enough to know why she was there.
From research on the internet and books and notes in my M-I-L's collection, I have concluded that the tree looks like this.
Alice Farmer ( M-I-L's- grandmother) b1867 Patoka, Marion County, IL <-- Squire Farmer b1812 ILd1916 Patoka, Marion County,IL <--Benjamin Farmer b1803 Kentuckyd1840 Fayette, IL <-- Absalom Farmer b1782 Edgecombe, NCd1853 IL <--Benjamin Farmer b1756 Proctors Creek, Chesterfield, VAd 1827 Edgecombe, NC <-- Lodowick b? England d1783 Lunenburg County.
Genealogy of the Farmer Family, Fayette County, Illinois
As quoted in the above book "FROM THE VIRGINIA GAZETTE found in the State and Congressional Libraries "Lodowik Farmer came from England and settled in the Colony of Virginia in 1740. He renounced his inherited title of "Lord Farmer". He brought with him wealth which he invested in land and negroes. Lodowik had saw-mills erected on his estates and engaged in merchandizing. He was a man of prominence and influence. He was in the Virginia Assembly Nov. 7th, 1760, and in May, 1775." The Robertson, Purcell and Related Families by Laura Purcell Robertson and The Virginia Gazette at the State and Congressional Libraries.
I can find nowhere on the internet genealogical websites that Lodowick was born in England.Any light that you can shine on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
