I'm am reseaching a Hilary or Hillery and Levi Farrington from Tennessee and any connecton they might of had to a Jim Durham of Verona, Missouri.... The robber OF A SOUTHERN EXPRESS CAR was executed in Union City, Tennessee,on OCTOBER 21, 1871.
Hilary was captured in Verona, MO - WITH ANOTHER OF THE ROBBERS, WILLIAM BARTON OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
Hilary was killed while trying to escape - HE WAS IN A STRUGGLE FOR A REVOLVER WITH ONE OF HIS CAPTORS, WILLIAM PINKERTON. A SOUTHERN EXPRESS SECURITY AGENT, PATRICK CONNELL, ACTUALLY HIT HILARY, AND HE FELL OVER THE LOW GUARD RAIL OF THE SIDEWHEELER, Illinois, WHILE BEING TRANSFERRED FROM CAIRO, ILLINOIS, TO COLUMBUS, KENTUCKY (where they would take a train to Union City.)
Levi was captured by ROBERT PINKERTON IN FARMINGTON, ILLINOIS (not Farmingdale). AND HE WAS SHOT TO DEATH IN A SOUTHERN HOTEL ROOM IN UNION CITY, WHERE HE WAS BEING HELD FOR TRIAL, BY VIGILANTES. He supposedly was shot 30 times, "and as evidence of the marksmanship of the men of Obion County, any one of the shots would have been fatal."
THE MAN WHO WAS LYNCHED BY MEMBERS OF THE SAME MOB, DAVID TOLER, WAS ALSO BEING HELD IN THE SAME ROOM WITH FARRINGTON, AFTER HAVING SHOT AND KILLED A UNION CITY POLICE OFFICER EARLIER IN THE EVENING. Evidently Toler and Levi Farrington previously knew one another, because the revolver with which Toler killed Officer Kline had once belonged to Farrington - so Levi evidently stated when questioned by Robert and William Pinkerton.
The fourth man involved in the robbery was a local named William Taylor. Both he and Barton were subsequently prosecuted and convicted of the robbery, and served 5 years in the Tennessee State Penitentiary at Nashville.
WHERE were the Farringtons from originally? In 1871, during the time of this robbery, flight, etc., their mother was living on a farm outside Waverly, Tennessee, with a "young" brother, Peter. After the robbery, she received a telegram from a Jim Durham, Verona, Missouri, and began a journey to that place with her black servants.
"Somewhere" in my digging, I read an obscure statement that the Farringtons were going to Missouri to work for their uncle....were Durham and Mrs. Farrington siblings, do you thinnk???
