Jennie:
Hi. I also am doing research on this line. I've been trying to find some documentation on the marriage of John Fearne and Mary Lee. I've read her name as Mary Margaret, but I think it was just someone trying to put records together that didn't belong. These same persons indicate that their daughter, Mary, married a William Hughlett/Hulet, but I don't know if that is right, either.
Let me try to give you a little background here and maybe you can tell me if this sounds like someone is trying to make a fit that isn't there:
Mary Hewlett/Hughlett married Owen Sullivant/Sullivan May 1721 in the Caroline Co. area of VA. Her parents were William Hughlett and Mary -- all the Internet postings, not the most reliable, show Mary Fearne, daughter of John Fearne and Mary Lee, as William's wife. The Hughletts were all from the Northumberland area of VA. The Fearnes, from what I've seen, are all from the Brunswick/Middlesex area, which was forme from Northumberland County, so I don't know.
Mary was William and Mary's only child as he died early (1717). The Sullivant's were from the same area as the Fearnes. I have speculated that with her father dying so untimely that she might have been taken under the wing of a member of her mother's family -- the Fearnes. This is only speculative.
Her father was the son of John Hulet and Elizabeth or Eleanor Carter. One of Mary's father's siblings was a Winifred. Nothing much is known of her. I found an interesting passage in the book Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol III, p 211:
1704: "Sarah, the administratrix of Thos. Salisbury, had released land to Mr. Thos Ferne, step-father to Thos. Salisbury & Winifred Hughlett. Mr. John Carlegie m. first, Winifred Hughlett. . ." -- Winifred was under 18 in 1704 at the time of her father's will. Do you know of an Elizabeth or Eleanor (Carter) Hulet/Hughlett that married a Thomas Ferne/Fearne?
I know that not only haven't I answered your question, but that I've only brought up more questions. But it sounds like you have some information on the Fearn/Fearne line and I'm just trying to see if my Mary who wed William Hughlett was indead Mary Fearne.
