We are a family of Feericks based mainly in London UK. I don't know any details about your grandfather I'm afraid, but a year or so ago Emmet Feerick in Mayo kindly gave me some information as to the general origins of the Feerick surname. I had heard it to be of either Spanish origin (from 'Fernandez') or an anglicised version of a Gaelic name('son of Peter'). Apparently many believe the origin is in fact Welsh, as many Welsh workers came over to work in the mines in the West of Ireland. However Emmet did not discover a name like Feerick in Welsh records so as he says it may be a derivative of a Welsh name. I would love to know for sure myself, as the prevalence of the surname Feerick in Ballinrobe (no other surname is as closely associated with a particular village) would seem to suggest descent from a particular individual. Edward MacLysaght goes into this in more detail in his book 'More Irish Surnames'. If anyone knows any more on this subject, please post!!
