Hi my great grandfather is buried in Crystal City Texas. His name was Juan De Dios Felan, which is also the name of my father. But that is all I know about him. For reasons I can’t remember my father once took me to Eagle Pass, Texas and we went and visited some of his family in Pierdras Negras. I do remember that their last name was Lechler, another Irish last name and I know that they own a carneceria. Can you look at these links and shed some light if you know of any first time Felans who came to Texas? Also this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811827836/002-4918127-7231250?v=glance&n=283155http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811827836/002-4918127-7231250?v=glance&n=283155 has a folded map of Ireland in the back which shows the O’Felan clan living in Waterford Ireland back in the days. I am assuming that the reason I am Tejano and not Irish looking is due either to San Patricios Battalion or John McGloin’s land grant.
I’m a fellow “Felan”. I’m from Corpus Christi, TX but my father Juan Felan was class of 1967 Robstown (TX) High. When I was 17 I joined the Marine Corps and fought in Iraqi Freedom. When I got out I got a job for Intel and was sent to Dublin, Ireland last year where I saw our family crest for sale at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was so cool. Then I got curious about the whole Irish Mexican Tejano connection. Here’s what I found.www.araltas.com/features/whelanhttp://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/irishmcmullen.htmhttp://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/irishmcmullen.htmhttp://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/SS/qis1.htmlhttp://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/SS/qis1.htmlhttp://www.libraryireland.com/Pedigrees1/Ormond.phphttp://www.libraryireland.com/Pedigrees1/Ormond.phpI’m not exactly sure where the connections start but let's just assume that we who are "Felan" and are Hispanic--more importantly TEJANO are most likely descendants of these San Patricios. Do you know any Felans who AREN'T Catholic?
