I have been tracing the descendants of Barzillai Fenimore (1763-1848) and his wife, Anna Brown (1771-1846) who lived in Mansfield Twp., Burlington Co., New Jersey before moving to Ohio (both are buried in Union Twp., Auglaize Co., Ohio).
You may have heard of the bogus Jennings family fortune that many New Jerseyans thought they were entitled to.Evidently this filtered down through Barzillai Fenimore's family, as well.
I have a copy of a letter written January 14, 1884 by a granddaughter of Barzillai -- Sarah Fenimore McCue (1819/22-1897), of Oregon City, Oregon to her nephew, speaking of this "inheritance."
And here's the nugget for you.She says:"I got a letter from Carrie Fenimore the week before Christmas, they was all well..I will write just what Carrie writes, in her letter about our fortune Warren [Fenimore, Carrie's brother] says we will have to make our pockets larger, next spring. He had received a letter from cousin Virginia Schyler & she said there [their] Lawer [lawyer] was a going to have it settled in the spring...It may be that the Philidelphia Lawers are on the right track.I hope so."
There are precious few Schuyler-Fenimore connections.I don't see a "Virginia Schuyler" (but she might be a wife) among the family, but it just might be that Rachel G. Fenimore is a daughter of one of Barzillai Fenimore's brothers -- Joshua (b. 1746), Joseph (b. 1750), William (b. 1754) or Jonathan (1756-1829).
