David, My father was from a small town 5km from Fundao. In his town, every year on Ash Wednesday and til this day, the people of this town go up the mountain to a place called Carvalhal.Whoever arrives earliest, I believe there's a set time to go, may claim land to work and plant for the family. Many people claim a plot, every year it's repeated. The land either belonged, belongs to the Carvalhal family, very wealthy that lived and was from Fundao. It's a big party, people bring picnics to enjoy and share with all other peolpe who just go for the party and abundance. Have you ever heard of this? It is true and still takes place. The name of this town is called Souto da Casa. Meaning House of the Chestnut grove. Carvalhal, the place where this place is located in Serra da guardunha, right across from Serra da Estrela. It's a beautful region.
