Dear Glynis, Well, we might be able to make something out of this!I do have a printout of that 1851 census with George and Sophie living with it looks to be Sophie's Granny Esther on Borough Road in Southwark (this area is awash with Fewtrells...but then in Victorian England London was awash with everyone...but Fewtrells had been in this area...Southwark, Bermondsey, Camberwell for quite some time!).
My third great grand uncle, Henry Fewtrell and his wife Matilda, along with Henry's niece, Lucy Ede (Henry's sister, Lucy, married an Elias Ede) lived just around the corner (5 Union Street) from George and Sophie.I also have a death certificate for a Sarah Fewtrell (daughter of George FEWTRELL, shoemaker, which matches with George FUTERALL's occupation) on the Nov, 1855 (registration, Borough Road, Southwark). So, I'm thinking it's probably the same guy?Sarah's birth certificate is available so there is one sure fire way to find out who her Mum was!And ascertain whether the FUTERALL was a misspelling. My own gt. gt. grandfather's marriage certificate was listed under FREWTELL...took me forever to find it (thought we were "illegitimate" too...LOL).
I can find no references to George FUTERALLs on the BMD.But a couple for William FUTERALL--who I assume is yours. As there are no references for Willaim FUTERALLS until 1860 or so (probably when your William FUTERALL was married?) -- I'm guessing that his surname was FEWTRELL originally and someone wrote it down incorrectly.
If your William was deposited in a workhouse (have you done any checking into the Overton workhouse, see what area it covered, and the Poor Law's) then I think your best bet would be to look for a Fewtrell family in that area. The chances of anyone coming from London to dump a kid are pretty minimal! There are Fewtrells in Farnham (a bit of a hike...25 miles or so...to Overton) going back to 1765 (I found this link to a will of a Richard Fewtrell in Farnham http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engsurry/r1750.htm...couldn'thttp://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~engsurry/r1750.htm...couldn't access the page though)and in Alton which is a hair closer. Not sure this is much help, just thinking things through on paper!Did you find any FEWTRELL families on the 1841 census in Hampshire?
Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.Whereabouts are you in Canada.I have cousins in Ontario (Sudbury area).
