I am looking for information on the wives (3) of Alanson Filer, in particular, Maria Pilkington, was born in 1810 in Bantry, of County Cork of Ireland and died July 7, 1888 in Racine, Wisconsin at age 78 years, and was married to Alanson Filer in 1834 - some say in Herkimer County, New York – but most likely in Wisconsin, when Maria was age 24 and Alanson was age 22 years.
(I also found: On Nov. 16, he married Mrs. Hannah Pilkington Green; a later marriage was with Elizabeth Crews; moved to the Root River settlement late in 1835; later returned to Evanston; in 1885, again lived at Racine, W I).
This, of course, really confuses the issue. What was Pilkington's name and had she been previously married?
The following section suggests that Paul Kingston had another daughter (or niece) – (or that, most likely, he adopted his niece, legally or not):
A statement in court made on December 11, 1876 by Maria Pilkington - Maria swore in a deposition that she, Maria Pilkington, age 67 years, came to this country in 1817 when she was age 8 years and that she was related to acquainted with Paul Kingston in his lifetime, he being her uncle and her mother’s brother; they lived for several weeks at the residence of Paul Kingston (1818 Census shows several extra people residing with Paul). That would make her mother a Kingston.
I further found that Alanson and Marie Filer had 4 children:
1. Julia Agnes Filer born about 1840 in Racine County, Wisconsin and died 1912; she was the second wife ofa cousin, Eliha Golden Filer, who was born 1840 in Jefferson County, New York, (Delos L. Filer, father of E. Golden, having been born of Scotch parents in Herkimer county, New York) and died 1920, both buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan – married December 23, 1865 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin.
2. Charles Filer born about 1842 in Racine County, Wisconsin; he was connected to the Methodist Episcopal South Church in Racine, listed as one the men who enlisted during the war of the rebellion; he died July 21, 1861 at Bull Run of wounds received during battle.
3. Roxana Filer born about 1847 in Racine County, Wisconsin; possibly married a Wentworth.
4. Martha Filer born about 1849 in Racine County, Wisconsin. (There is a Martha Helen Filer born 1849 died 1926 buried in same cemetery as Julia and E Golden Filer; Oak Grove Cemetery, Manistee, Manistee County, Michigan – there is a Mattie J. Filer in the 1880 Census living with Golden and Julia).
Census records show:
1880 Filer City, Manistee County, Michigan, Golden Filer, age 39, born New York, Lumber Manufacturer; Julia A. Filer, age 39, wife, born Wisconsin; Mattie J. Filer, age 28, born Wisconsin, Sister, Book Keeper; 2 other adults.
In 1880 Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin, Alanson Filer, age 68, born New York, Life Insurance Agent; Maria, age 60, born Ireland, parents born Ireland; Elsie Wentworth, age 4, born (1876) Wisconsin, parents born Wisconsin, granddaughter; servant Mary Sneberger.
Now, who are the parents of Elsie Wentworth? So many mysteries.
I am hoping that some descendant of Alanson's will have information on the parents of Maria Pilkington, so I can make a connection to Paul Kingston, my direct ancestor.
Thank you for any further information you can supply,
