(I am posting this to the PHILYAW GenForum, too, since it's the same surname.)
In the Philyaw Bible that Michael Hopkins posted, the names are written of the children of John FILYAW and Easther LARGE. Can anyone tell me about the one who appears to be the oldest:
Elizabeth Filyaw the daughter of John Filyaw and his Easther was born July th 17, 1797
I am searching for Artilissa FILYAW b abt 1794, probably in SC or GA. Her father is said to be John FILYAW, her mother a Cherokee. I have no proof of either assertion. I do know that Artilissa married Richard P. WOODRUFF 14 Feb 1818 Wilkes Co GA, but apparently she had a child previous to that marriage, named James William or Willam James. He used the surname PHILYAW/FILLYAW all his life. After his death (1866 Jefferson Co AL), the family assumed the surname AARON.
I am wondering if Elizabeth FILYAW may have been given the name Elizabeth Artilissa FILYAW at birth but was called by her middle name.
I haven't seen anything about Elizabeth except her mention in the Bible. Helen Roberts's pedigree (ancestry.com World Tree) doesn't list her at all as one of John and Easter's children. Does anyone know what happened to her? I would be grateful for any information or informed guesses. Artilissa is my 3gr-grandmother through her son James William/William James FILYAW. Their origins are murky indeed. The Mormon (AARON) descendants have a story that involves an early marriage of Artilissa FILYAW to James William AARON, but they have no documentation and I can't make sense of it, because the son all his life used the name FILYAW, not AARON, and Artilissa used the name FILYAW (FILIO) when she married in 1818.
