This is a long shot but I am trying to trace details of my Grandfather, John Cruickshank Smith who was born in Banf/Banfshire in either 1853/1854. He stated on various documents that his father was John Smith, Engineer and his mother was Mary Cruickshank.
Unfortunately we are not able to verify the information - it was on a marriage certificate and just provided by JCS. Similarly his "advised" year of birth pre-dates civil registration in Scotland and so individual records would have to be searched and even then there is nothing to prove it is the correct date!
The reason for this enquiry is the emergence of the Findlater name in our family.
My grandparents were married as Smith in Perth, Western Australia in 1903 [my grandmother was born in Australia] and included in the given names of all their 3 children [one of whom is my father]the name of Findlater [e.g Ronald Findlater Gower SMITH]There may even have been an attempt to register their names as Findlater-Smith as it seems strange that the two girls also got the name.
On my grandfathers death in 1931 an attempt was made to bury him under the name of Findlater-Smith [resisted by the authorities!] A similar attempt was made on the death of my Grandmother in 1957 - with the same results.
However, during my grandparents lifetime, my father [the only male] registered all his children in the name of Findlater-Smith [despite him being only a Smith - the authorities must have been a little more lenient]My father also used the name Findlater-Smith throughout most of his life as did his sisters, again, presumeably at the urging of their parents [who I think may also have used it themselves]
What does this mean? I don't know - other than assuming a previous connection by my grandfather [whose past before the age of 45 is a total mystery] with the Findlaters either in Banf/Banfshire, or, a later relationship with a family named Findlater. Whatever the reason there was a strong desire on my grandparents part [strongest on my grandfather's side I gather,]as my grandmother had Welsh parentage]to adopt the Findlater name into the family.
If there is anyone out there who has some knowledge of a John Cruickshank Smith being associated with the Findlaters [possibly even via the New Zealand branch of the family]
If anyone does have some knowledge I would appreciate hearing from you.
