Ms. Rector:
I have just begun to research my Finley ancestry. Accurate, DOCUMENTED information is very hard to find. It seems most internet 'trees' and Finley sites rely on Stout's The Clan Finley, which is full of errors/misrepresentations. For example, he claims (without citing his source) Archibald Finlay is mentioned in a 1314 charter "one-half marcate of land in Rousknot, Perthshire."
I have yet to find "Rousknot" in Perth or elsewhere in Scotland.
He claims Eleanor Stewart, wife of John Finlay (1356- 1445) was the daughter of John Stewart of Fothergill. Although that may be true, I have not been able to confirm it yet.
I suggest you use this source with care. I also ask anyone who reads our posts to respond with any information, citing sources, which confirms Mr. Stout's claims.
Regards,
Bill Culverhouse
