THIS IS NOT SOMEONE I AM SEEKING.I saw this diary for auction on Ebay and thought a Fiske or Andrews family member might have an interest.I am posting this for information only.
"Offered up for auction today is the 1871 diary of W.D. Fiske. There are so many wonderful things about this diary especially the fact that it is full of some incredible historical events. It seems our Mr. Fiske was some kind of general agent or consulting engineer who worked with pumps of some kind. The diary shows him traveling extensively all over the Eastern part of the U.S. purchasing, installing or fixing various pumps. In fact in the front of the diary you’ll find a handwritten inscription that says;
Lieut Union Army/ChicagoFire/Steamboat/OhioFair/NY Riot Ebay Item number: 180101700525
“W.D. Fiske General Agent. Knowle & Libbey (or it could be Sibbey) 92 & 94 Liberty Street New York”
Mr. Fiske (born in 1841) lives in Springfield Massachusetts and is married to Agnes Hosmer Andrews (born in 1843). They have a son by the name of Howard who was born in 1869.
There were three things that really stood out for me as far as this diary is concerned. The first is that while Wilbur is traveling the country side he is always mentioning many of the different sites (and people) he visits that have to do with historical civil war events. As I was doing a bit of research, I found Wilbur on one of the genealogy web sites and I discovered that he was a Lieutenant in the Union Army and was shot in the lungs but recovered partially. Now I can see why he has such a great interest in this part of history, especially since the war ended only 6 years earlier. I don’t know which army he served on but I’m sure that can easily be found.
The second thing that stood out was his mention of the great Chicago fire of 1871. He also takes a trip to Chicago only a month after this terrible disaster. An incredible web site devoted to this tragedy is at http://www.chicagohs.org/fire/intro/gcf-index.htmlhttp://www.chicagohs.org/fire/intro/gcf-index.html
