Just in case anyone's interested, my paternal grandmother was a Fitton (Katharine), and my father, a classical scholar, took the Fitton from her and the Brown from his own father. This is probably very stale news to many of you, but I take it you are aware that the Fittons were nobility - smooth operators at the Court, it would seem from the meaning of the name! - and lost their ancestral seat, Galsworth Hall, for fighting on the losing side of the civil war. Our branch is descended from the father of Mary Fitton (possibly Shakespeare's Dark Lady), whose name eludes me. I'm quite a history buff, so any further historical info would be great!
