I am trying to find the exact link for our line of Flatts.I know WHICH line they come from and WHO the father of our Andrew Jackson Flatt was.I just can't find the EXACT link (with documentation).
Andrew's father was John Flatt (I know, there are TONS of those). His mother is listed on his death certificate as Sarah___.However, my husband was 14 when his grandfather (Andrew Jackson Flatt) passed away and he remembers quite clearly that his father and other family members were sitting around the dining table discussing who Andrew's parents were. They KNEW that his father's name was John, but they weren't SURE about the name of his mother. They THOUGHT that it was Sarah.
Knowing this uncertainty about HER name and also knowing that he had a sister named"Josie" YARK, who had come to visit him several times from Bucyrus, Ohio (he had gone there to visit her as well)I tried to locate more information on her.I knew that she had a daughter named Myrtle who had married a SNAVELY and I also knew that Josie's husband's name was Henry YARK.With this information, I located HER death certificate information.Apparently her family had better information on her mother (Andrew's mother) than our family had, because they even had a SURNAME for her. They had that the mother was Catherine OWEN.I suppose that the possibility could be that she might have went by BOTH names (maybe Sarah Catherine Owen????).
At any rate, Andrew's father was in the Civil War.He fought for the Union (this may have alienated him to the rest of his family???).He died shortly after the CW from disease contracted while he was in there.Andrew's mother remarried shortly after John's death (possibly to a man named Forcum).Andrew and his step-father didn't get along and Andrew can be found in another family household in the census of 1870 at age 17.Was this family? If so how were they related?Shortly after this census Andrew came to Missouri (he was still 17 so it was fairly quickly).
Shortly afther Andrew arrived in Missouri, his brother, Johnny, came to Missouri.Johnny fell off of the back of a wagon and was killed when the shotgun that he was holding discharged, hitting him in the stomach.
I found an Andrew in the 1860 Jackson Co. TN census at the age of 7 (which would be correct for our Andrew's age).He was in the household of a John Flatt (also would be correct). However, the wife's name was Phebe and the make-up of other children was questionable (at least to me--since I don't know the names of Andrew's other siblings, they could be correct in this census). There wasn't a child named John in this census, but one named Jones (Jonas??).This could have been a mutilation of John?? Or, maybe his name was actually Jonas and he was called John???I also don't recall seeing a Josephine (Josie's real name). So, this is all so confusing. All of these "mother" names.Any help would be most sincerely appreciated. (This family is definitely related to the Isaac Columbus Flatt family with letters from members of that family to Andrew as proof) Joan Flatt
