Ludger,I have been researching my Fleer roots for thirty years. Most, if not all, of the Fleers in the USA immigrated from Herford, Westfalia, in Northern Germany.Gunter Wehmeier, a German researcher, feels that the name originated in Friesland- mainly because of the double 'e' which only occurs in the literature of Friesland as Fle', the accent having the effect of doubling the vowel. He did not attempt to give a meaning. Are your roots originally from the Herford area?
