Thomas, I have another bit of interesting news to tell you...I have now confirmed from three different family sources that GFF was married BEFORE he married Mertie Belle Kimball!!!It's possible his previous marriage was in Maine...and there are a few GF Flewelling's married in Aroostook Co that could be him (at least at first glance) but on further examination, it appears that it could not be him, because there were several children born to each of those unions, which, even if he were such a scoundrel, he would have had to make MANY trips out of state to accomplish such a feat.It just doesn't seem that likely.
My aunt (his grand-daughter) told me yesterday that he never told Mertie Belle about his previous marriage until very late in life (probably after their children were gone). My aunt heard it from her mother, Mary Sophronia Flewelling, GFF's daughter. Then I spoke to two other living Flewelling relatives (both his grand-daughters) and they both agreed they had heard he was married before. All three women agreed that they had never heard anything about GFF's family while growing up...isn't that strange?
Today I spoke to one of his great-grandsons (Frank F.) and the wife of his other great-grandson (Richard F.).Richard's wife was very helpful, but said that none of them had ever heard what his parent's names were or of any siblings.
The one good thing that came of all these calls is that now I have a connection with GFF's daughter-in-law.I have left a message for her and will continue to try to get a hold of her. I'm hopeful that she will have some inside knowledge of her FIL for us, since she is the oldest and closest relative to GFF.She was married to the late GFF Jr
My aunt conjectures that the reason we never hear anything about GFF's family is because he might have "run out" on his marriage, but running away to New Hampshire.I suppose anything is possible.I'm beginning to believe that he just picked his name out of a hat--or perhaps took on the name of another living relative of the time, to keep himself from being found...
