I am researching the descendants of Peter George FLORIDA who was my wife's 5 x GGrand father. He was christened in Radnage, Buckinghamshire UK on 22nd October 1769 and the entry in the register reads - "a negro child about eight years of age". My thoughts are that he was called Florida because of where he came from and that he was the son of a slave or worker in the plantations of Florida at the time.
The rector of Radnage who performed the christening was a C W Tonyn whose brother was General Patrick Tonyn - who was Governor of East Florida between 1775 and 1783, hence the connection of Radnage with Florida.
