The name is spelled various ways, probably depending on the clerk writing the records heard the name pronounced.As you can see, in some records it is spelled Oflaherty , Olforiday, and Flaharty. In many of the records it is Floriday/Flority or some variation of that. By the time they got to TN it was fairly consistent Florida.
It would appear the name was originally Oflaherty or Flaherty, and with southern accents evolved into Flority/Floriday to Florida, a name known to people because of the state. It appears to be a similar thing that some Kennedy families evolved into the surname Canada.
