Thanks Carol, for your very careful and thorough reply.
Can you add any information about Thomas Cole Spencer's two wives? I have this note about him. Colonial Families of the United States of America. New York: 1907. "CAPTAIN THOMAS COLE SPENCER of Charlotte County, Virginia; b. 1774; d. 1860; m. (firstly) 1796, Frances PEARCE, of New Jersey, d. 1817; m. (secondly) Mary SPAULDING."
I've never been able to find anything more about Frances Pearce other than "Daughter of Martin Pearce. Husband's Uncle Thomas gives surety for marriage bond. Married by Rev. Archibald Alexander (who writes Pierce)." (I'm afraid I made these notes before I understood the value of recording their sources.) Do you have anything beyond that?
About his second wife, they have Mary Spaulding. You've found this gem, "Virginia Marriages 1740-1850. THOMAS C. SPENCER to MARY [Mrs.] PURNALL on 17 October 1835 in Prince Edward." Could Spaulding been Mary Purnall's maiden name?
