Thanks for the great info. on the Wolf Lake Forans! There might be a connection there. The birthdate of my John/James Foran, b. 1812, Ireland, fits right into their family tree for John Foran. Do you know what year Michael Foran and his brothers immigrated? John/James Foran immigrated to the US abt.1848 with his family of 5 sons. My gggrandfather, John Foran, was one of those sons and he was about 8 years old then. I have a paper that said he was in the US for sixty years. Whether he came from Canada or from Ireland is the big question but with a large family like that, immigrating from Canada makes more sense. Maybe his brothers digging canals in IL told him what great farmland there was in IL! The Illinois and Michigan Canal near Joliet was finished and opertional by 1848 so he didn't work on it. I have been reading a lot of Irish immigration history and I found out that the Canadian ports of entry were the most popular. So I am looking for a Canada connection for my Forans because that would have been their logical route. Coming across country from NY would have been difficult and expensive. It sounds like I need to make a visit to Wolf Lake too and connect our Chicago Forans to the area but I am too far away for that. Thanks for your help and suggestions!
