Judy, there is conflicting information regarding the parentage of Eleanor Brewer. Many researchers list John Brewer as her father. This comes from, as far as I know, a family story passed down among the descendants of Wiley and Eleanor, which has never been verified, to my knowledge.
My mother and I as well as others have done extensive research on our Brewer line, and believe that Eleanor was the eldest daughter of Willis Brewer and Isabella West. They married April 1, 1824 in Lawrence Co., AR.Willis was b. April 7, 1796, possibly in Va, and Isabella was b. March 15, 1805, probably in TN, the daughter of George and Susannah West. The Fores' family says Eleanor always said her father didn't approve of Wiley because he had been known to take a drink, so they eloped and relations were severed.(Wiley later became a very devout Christian and even helped establish a church in Central Texas.)Eleanor wasn't listed in the Willis Brewer family Bible. However, she was named in his probate papers, on a list of his living children's names, as E. C. M. Fore (which I believe is how it is written on her headstone.)
Other details also match; Eleanor was said to be part Indian, and so were Willis' children, though it's never been proved to my knowledge. The Willis Brewers lived in Independence, Lawrence, and Sharp Counties of AR, and Wiley and Eleanor were supposed to have been married in Lawrence Co.She lived in Kaufman/Rockwall Co., TX for a time after her marriage, and so did other Brewers and related families around that time and afterward. And of course, her birthdate of abt. 1826 would fit between her parents' 1824 marriage and the birthdate of what would have been the second child, William L. Brewer b. March 30, 1831.And finally, Willis Brewer was known to be strongly against alcohol use.
