My grandmother Hannah Formby was born in 1912 in Scarisbrick, Lancashire. She was the eldest of 6 children, the others are named John, George, Alice, Richard (Dick), and Rose. She married Mark Leatherbarrow in 1932, also of Scarisbrick. There are lots of Formbys around the area, which is very close to Formby itself, and I have at least 12 second cousins. Her father's origins are a bit of a mystery at the moment, as he was not brought up by his own parents, but we're looking. I think her mother was born as a Wright, also in the village. They were brought up as Roman Catholics, and went to St Elizabeth's church (although my grandmother married a CofE man!)and worked on farms.
There is a Formby coat of arms in Lancaster Castle, and allegedly a Richard Formby of around the 14th Century who was an arms bearer to the king stood 7 feet tall and was one of the tallest men who ever lived.
