I have been researching my family history through my grandfather William . Hunt and great-grandparents Barbara Fortney and Thomas Anderson Hunt, through Jean Henri Fortineaux born 1708 died 1745 in Frederick County, Maryland. The Fortineaux's lived in the Palatinate, although it's possible that they were not always there. The edict urging the extermination of the Huguenots was issued 29 Jan. 1536. On March 1, 1562 1200 were slain. At the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, an exodus began of 200,000 into Switzerland, Germany, Holland and Britain. The Huguenot site lists Jean Henri Fortineaux as a Huguenot, who lived in France. He married Catherine Berger. Actually, the name is said to have originated in the Languedoc region. Name varients are numerous, such as Fortney, Fordney, Fordineaux, Fortineaux, Fortinet, Forner, Fornier, and probably many other, due to hand written documents being at times difficult to read, and other reasons.
