Rachel Alice Esterly Forney, a 10-year resident of Heritage Harbour and formerly of Glenn Dale for 33 years, died Tuesday, December 7 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born in Columbiana, Ohio, Rachel and her family became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbiana. While in junior high she was a member of a girl's trio, which performed at many social and patriotic events. Rachel graduated from high school in 1953 where she was a member of the girl's glee club and was a varsity cheerleader. Following high school graduation, Rachel was employed by the Franklin Furniture Co., a furniture manufacturer in her hometown, where she served as a secretary to a number of senior company officials.
On June 20, 1957 Rachel married Fredric D. Forney. When her husband entered active duty in the U.S. Army they relocated to Maryland where they remained after Fredric completed his military tour. In Maryland, Rachel was employed at the Prince George's General Hospital as a secretary to the hospital administrator. After her children were in school she worked part-time for several department stores as a salesperson and also as an Avon representative. Active in the Glenn Dale chapter of the USDA-sponsored Homemakers, serving a term as president, Rachel and Fred joined the Glenn Dale United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir. Currently Rachel and her husband are members of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Edgewater, where they are active in the seniors group. After retirement, they conducted a small crafts /hobby business, offering their wood products at local crafts fairs for many years. Rachel is survived by her husband, Fredric D. Forney; a daughter, Susan L. McAleer of Laurel; two sons, Fredric D. Forney, Jr. of Crofton and John A. Forney of Glen Burnie.
Friends may call at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 4 Wallace Manor Rd., Edgewater on Friday, December 10 from 10:30 a.m. until her memorial service begins at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
