I have only recently found this site. Makes interesting reading. Been looking at the various sugestions for the origin. My father born in 1897 always told me that the correct pronunciation of the name is 'For sher' and there are a number of people in Lancashire who still pronounce it that way. This ties in very nicely with the French pronunciation of Fougeres. But I can not see why the said Fougeres should come and settle in Lancashire. I think 90% of us can trace our ancestry to the south part of Lancashire. So the 'Fouroasaugh' (four oak woods) would get my vote. I don't suppose we will ever know for sure.
