I have sent two emails to you on your email address, the second one was rejected - so I don't know if you received the first one or not.So I am going to go through the forum to make sure this is delivered to you.I am going to duplicate my first email:
This is out of the blue - so bear with me.I found you under Genforum.com.
I work with the Matagorda County Genealogical Society in identifying the graves of veterans - Confederate - Union and all the rest.At present we have cataloged over 3,000 veteran's graves in Matagorda County.I am retired from the US Navy and work as a funeral director at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.
Through Jack Fortenberry from Midfield, TX - who I ran into at the library, I discovered his Great Grandfather was a Confederate veteran. He could not recall what his name was - but he knew he was the father of Forest Fortenberry. He said he was buried at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing, TX.He also said the grave was just above Forest and unmarked.
After doing some fairly easy digging I found Forest's Dad was Henry II, and he had served in the Confederate Army from Arkansas. His wife Melissa is listed in the Hawley Cemetery records as being in a lost grave - Henry II is not in their records.Above Forest's grave are two concrete blocks which were put in during the late 1930's after a fire had gone through the cemetery and burned all the wooden markers.I believe these are the graves of Henry II and Melissa.
Now to the point. I will be working with Jack to acquire a Confederate grave marker for Henry II so his grave will be marked. The problem we have is when was he born and when did he die...
From the 1900 Jackson County, TX federal census we find someone - him/his wife - whoever was answering the census taker - had given his date of birth as Oct 1841 - if that is correct - does anyone know what day?
From Ancestry.com we found a person under the family tree section (RScholl Davenport Family Tree) that said he died on 30 November 1905.We made contact with that person, but he could not recall where he picked up that date.I could not find Henry II in the 1910 census, and Melissa died on July 1, 1910 - I located her death certificate - Forest was the informant - Melissa was listed as a widow and they were living at Blessing, TX at the time.
Another question I have is - is it possible to confirm his middle name was Lofton - every record I have located simply gives his name as Henry - no "L" or Lofton is given. The information I have on your father does give Lofton as his middle name.
There is a Fortenberry Family Plot at Hawley Cemetery. The graves I have identified there are:
1.Henry II and Melissa Ann (McMinn) Fortenberry (unmarked - plain concrete blocks) 2.Henry III (Marked II) and Walcy G. (Moore) Fortenberry (your parents?) 3.Annie J. (Fortenberry) and Guy M. Brinkley (Annie is a sister to your Dad) 4.D.F. (Daniel Forrest) and Johnnie Anna (Hogan) Fortenberry 5.J.J. Sr. (Jimmie Jay) and Fredonia Elizabeth (Lafferty) Fortenberry
Any assistance you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.Genealogy is a two way street, so if I can help you in some way please don't hesitate to ask.
