Thank you for your response.Since I posted my question, I was able to discover a few things which I believe leads to the discovery of Elizabeth’s identity, but it disagrees somewhat with yours.Could you share the source(s) for your information? Do you have any documentation (birth/death/marriage records) to support your statements?
I believe Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Fosdick, was the daughter of SAMUEL & DEBORAH THORN(E).Not “Throne” as you have written it (perhaps that was a typo?).The Thorn - found with and without a final “e” - family were Quakers who moved up to Dutchess and Ulster counties either from Long Island or Westchester Co.
My identification is based primarily on the Will of widow Abigail Crawford. She mentions “my half sister, Anna Hull;” a son of James and Anna Hull; and “my half brother Samuel Adams.”The “Descendents of Joseph Hull” (p. 303) states Anna is the daughter of Abel Adams; other sources show Samuel to be Abel’s son as well. Then we have the record 22 October 1772 of Abel Adams' marriage to Deborah “widow of Sam’l Thorn” in the Nine Partners (Quaker) Monthly Meeting notes. So, this certainly seems to clinch Abigail’s identity as a daughter of SAMUEL & DEBORAH THORNE.
As far as Elizabeth goes, Abigail’s Will also mentions in this order:
“Sarah, Martha, Deborah, Rebecca Ann Haight, daughters of Nathaniel and Mary Haight;”
“Abigail Griffin, Phila Birdsall, Deborah, Nathaniel, Eliza, Samuel T. and Brundage Tompkins, children of Brundage and Phebe Tompkins;”
“Children of my sister Sarah Begardus(?): Phebe Cannan, Hannah Newcout(?), Deborah, John and Joseph Moore, Roxsie Dickerson, Emeline and Abijane Rochraell(?), Samuel Moore”
“Children of Samuel and Elizabeth Fosdick: Deborah Dickerson, Mary Nosbury, Henry C., David and Nathaniel Fosdick”
“Selah Tuthill Martin, son of James and Phebe Martin”
“my THREE SISTERS children as above named”
Obviously she only clearly identifies one of the above as her sister - Sarah Bogardus (? the writing is difficult to read). So out of the following - Mary Haight - Phebe Tompkins -Elizabeth Fosdick - Phebe Martin - who are her other two sisters??
Although I have not seen the source myself, an online pedigree cites the Will of Thomas Thorne, father of Samuel Thorne, as mentioning Samuel’s daughters: Sarah, Abigail, ELIZABETH and PHEBE (the wife of Brundage Tompkins), which fits with Abigail’s Will.
In your case, it looks as if someone PRESUMED Elizabeth’s father’s name was “Henry Crawford” Thorne because that is the name they gave their 1st born son.But in this instance, I believe he was named after his uncle, Abigail’s husband, Henry Crawford.Henry Crawford was a very wealthy man who had no children of his own, and as it was a custom to leave legacies to namesakes, a bunch of Henry’s relations named their sons Henry!Three of his brother’s named sons Henry, as did a friend and neighbor, AND Samuel and Elizabeth Fosdick. In this case, they were right: Henry Crawford Fosdick received a legacy of $250 from the Will of Henry Crawford!
I am also skeptical that Elizabeth was born in Greene County, as you state; but probably in Westchester or maybe even in Dutchess Co.
Anyway, I am not a Fosdick nor a Thorne, so I won’t be pursing this further. My query was meant to help identify Abigail, Henry Crawford’s wife. The Crawford family is who I am investigating and I was hoping knowing who his wife was might give me some clues.
I hope this information will be helpful to you.If you desire any further clarification, please let me know.
Thanks again for your response.
