just found your message. My great grandfather was Charles Fothergill - born approx. Nov. 25, 1831 in England. On his marriage register to my great grandmother Frances Rodgers on Dec. 4th, 1865 he listed his parents as Thomas & Elizabeth Fothergill. During research I can not find much about him - have only his mother lsited as Elizaberth Fothergill on a inquiry from England. My mother his granddaughter always said her great grandmother was Elizabeth Butterworth so we always assumed that was Charles mothers maiden name but I have not found any leads there either.
He was a very secretive man and would not talk about his life. We just have bits & pices that have filtered down through the years.
His 1st son was my grandfather Edward Rodgers Fothergill and his 2nd son was named Joseph Wilson Fothergill. Rumour had it Wilson was from his mothers 2nd marriage or something, he also had sons named George, Robert and Charles jr
He apparently had siblings that were suppose to come out to Canada but did not appear. He wrote home to England but forwarded his letters to someone in the States and they sent them on to England.
He died in approx 1922 - he worked on the railway laying tracks from York to Proton township Grey County Ontario were he met and married my great grandmother.
