I have now re-thought the opinion I stated about the Luke Thornton who was a 1777 witness to the John Foushee Will.I no longer think that it was Luke Thornton, son of Daniel Thornton of Orange. That Luke Thornton was born about 1769.See below.
•Event: Luke Thornton gave an Affidavit in June 1835 in Owen County, KY in support of his nephew Willam B. Thornton's claim for Jesse Thornton's military service in the Revolution. He stated his age (in 1835) was "about" 66 years. Thus, he was born about 1769, and would have been too young to witness a Will in 1777 (at the age of only 8).
Therefore, the witness was some other Luke Thornton.I am now of the opinion that this witness was possibly the man in one (or both??) of the following Orange County records, one from 1758 and one from 1768 (notice both make mention of Foushee and Luke Thornton).
23 November 1758, Page 439 (of original document) On the Petition of some of the Inhabitants above the old Court house for the Road to turn from the Rockey Run by Major Moors up the River the best & nearest way to Orange Court house Ordered that Arjalon Price John Foshee, Thomas Hughs & Luke Thornton or any of them being first sworn as the Law directs do Veiw the sd. Way Petd. for & make their Report to the Court of the Conveniences & inconveneinces attending the same --
27 October 1768, Page 528 (O.C.M.B. 1, Page 194) On the Motion of Alex. McDonald to have a Veiw to Turn the road that leads down to The Raccoon Ford to turn out at Foshees ford and to go Down the River to Prices Plant Bed Ordered that Thomas Porter, Luke Thornton, Bryan Sisson and Wm. Sisson or any three of Them do Veiw the said Way and make report to the Court of the Conveinences & inconveinences Attending the Same According to Law
This Luke Thornton MIGHT have been the one born about 1698-1710, son of Luke Jr. and grandson of Luke Sr.Or that Luke (Luke III) might have had a son named Luke, by his wife, Millicent (Ransdell) (Longworth) Thornton.–Any such son would have been born between 1728 (when Luke and Millicent married) and about 1746 (by which time Millicent would probably have stopped bearing children, being over 40).
How was this Luke Thornton related to Apphia (Thornton??) Foushee? Was he her uncle?Or possibly her father?Or, if the younger Luke, was he her cousin, or possibly brother? If anyone has any information that would shed light on this question, please post here or contact me directly at email@example.com.
