Found on the 1861 census for England with my own notes, largely from the IGI: St Mary Newington, Lambeth Mary FOWLIE head widow age 54 housekeeper b Scotland Alexander FOWLIE son unm age 26 blacksmith b Scotland James FOWLIE son unm age 24 stationer's clerk b Scotland Agnes FOWLIE daur age 22 b Scotland Margaret FOWLIE daur age 19 b Scotland
Given the names and ages, I think this may be the family of James FOWLIE and Mary GORDON who were married in Fintray in 1827 (24 Feb Fintray, 18 Feb Dyce). Alexander was born 07 Sept and christened 25 Oct 1834 Fintray. James jr was born 04 Nov and christened 01 Dec 1836 Fintray. Agnes Isabella was christened 18 May 1839 Ratho, Midlothian. Margaret Sharp was born 02 Sept 1841 Ratho, Midlothian. There was an additional child Mary Ann FOWLIE born 29 July and christened 27 August 1831 Fintray who appears below. It makes sense that she would have moved south with her family, although she appears elsewhere in the census. The index to civil registration shows Mary Ann FOWLIE marrying Joseph Edward M. SEELEY March quarter 1867.
Mary (GORDON) FOWLIE appears in the 1881 census Deptford St Paul Kent age 75 as the mother of head James FOWLIE unm age 44, along with [his] sister Mary A[nn?] SEELEY married age 49 and her three children. No sign of Alexander, and the girls may have married, surnames unknown.
James is still in Lambeth for the 1901 census. He is 64, a merchants clerk temporary, born Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
St Nicholas, Durham George FOWLIE head marr age 24 woolen carpet weaver born Scotland Margaret FOWLIE wife marr age 23 born Scotland George FOWLIE son age 3 born Scotland Ann FOWLIE daur age 1 month born St Nicholas, Durham
This family may be George FOWLIE and Margaret STEWART married 31 Dec 1856 St Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen.George's parents are possibly George FOWLIE and Rachel COWIE, if George jr was born 22 May and christened 28 Aug 1836 New Deer. Wee George was born 02 Mar 1858 St. Nicholas, Aberdeen.Presumably the family moved to England between his birth in 1858 and Ann's in 1861 [March quarter]. They may have returned to Scotland by 1863 since the next two children after Ann were born at Old Machar. They do not appear in the 1881 (English) census.
