Kehaulani, That is an interesting name. My wife's maiden name is Fraga. Here in New England, there are many Fragas of Portuguese (Azore Islands) descent. In short, her history:
1 Matthew or Mateus Coelho de Fraga (lived probably in the early 1800s); m. Maria de Rozario. One child was:
2 Bento Coelho Fraga; b. in St. Bartolomeu, Terceira, Acores; m. Maria Jose. She was the daughter of Antonio Rosario da Silva and Delfina Candida. Bento was a farmer.
One of the children born in St. Bartolomeu, Terceira:
3) Antonio Coelho Fraga; b. Mar 31, 1875 in St. Bartolomeu, Terceira; baptized Apr 16, 1875; m. Maria do Socorro; b. 1867 in St. Bartolomeu; d. Nov 02, 1929 at six PM. She was the daughter of Antonio Martins and Maria Jestrudes Candida. One of the children of Antonio Coelho and Maria (Socorro) Fraga born in St. Bartolomeu, Terceira, Azores:
4) Antonio Coelho Fraga; b. Nov 19, 1895 in Pesqueiro, St. Bartolomeu Teceira, Azores; d. Dec 26, 1941 in Taunton, MA; m. Jan 21, 1922 in Taunton, in St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church by Reverend Alex Louro, to Etelvina Bertao (See the Bertao family). Antonio's maternal grandparents were Antonio Martins and Maria Jestrudes Candida.
Antonio Coelho Fraga left Teceira in 1920 after his father died in the plague, but was detained at Ellis Island after failing the literacy test. The Bertaos, who were cousins, arranged to have him move in with them in Taunton. On the day after Christmas, 1941, he was visiting his cousin, Jack Correia, when a heart attack took his life. Etelvina, also known as “Vangie” was left with 12 children and a farm.
One of the 12 children was my wife's father who is still alive.
I'd be interested in looking at this site where you found Jewish roots to the name.
Rick in Taunton, MA
