This is an extract from her letter to mu Uncle dataed 14 Aug 1979. He had obviously been in correspondance with her, I only have this letter as I found it amongst my fathers piles of paper! My uncle may have more and I will contact him if you wish once Christmas is out of the way. .... Sorry for the delay in writing but I was waiting to receive another certificate from St Catherines House. It arrived yesterday. It was the death certificate for a Caroline Fray. I had thought that it would be for Caroline wife of Augustus but it is for their daughter. She died aged 30 yrs old in 1853, putting her birth at 1825. Her brother Alferd (the sailor) was born 1848 - quite a span of child bearing. What I hope to do now is get the following census returns at the Mormon Church in Vestal N.Y. about 30 miles away) 1851 & 1861 St George the Martyr Southwark 1871 Pontypridd, Glamorgan 1871 & 1861 Cardiff (for Mary Lewis Fray) 1851 St Mary Newington, Surrey
I told my father-in law about not finding any Roger Fray in the births in England and also asked him about John Henry. He had never heard of a JH. What I still need to find out is the B, M & D of Augustus & Caroline Wallis Fray. It appears that their marriage would be prior to 1823 when Caroline was born.
Keiths nephew (his sister Joan's son)was married this past weekend in Pittsburgh, Pa. All the Frays were there & I took a picture of them. I'll send you a copy. The picture I took of you and all my pictures from England are ruined as the film broke off without re-winding. ..... P.S. We always refer to Alfred, son of Augustus & Caroline Wallis as a sailor. However, when William Henry was born in 1874 Alfreds occupation was listed as a colliery labourer. I am going to write to the local newspaper in Pontypridd to see if I can find out anything more.
There was also a small chart with the letter which gave details of William Henry's wife and 'in-laws' as well as the Frays. Since the letter was written the IGI has 'grown' and now includes the marriage of Augustus & Caroline (1846 St Matthew, Bethnal Green, London) so the death certificate that Nancy obtained is intriguing to say the least, and more likely inaccurate (age 23 weeks or months not 23 years? or Caroline the Wife)so the local registrar or parish registers may need consulting. The William son of Augustus & Caroline in the IGI baptised at Bennington, Herts may be another son as you suggest, the Births indexes only have a William registered the previous year at Newington. Could William have been the cause of his mother's death and been baptised by someone else (uncle, aunt, grand-parent)or did Augustus move away from London??
How much information have you got already. I work full time so don't get to London as often as I like despite living 30 miles away but I guess it is a lot easier for me to get the information than for you. Let me know if I can help.
I was born a Fray and have traced back to 1579 in Wiltshire but have collected lots of info on the other UK lines.
