Circa 1910s-20s photo of Joe S. Freitas & wife, Danville, CA
I purchased in the Niles District of Fremont, CA, the subject studio portrait of a middle-aged couple taken by an unknown photographer (bears no studio name or address). It is identified on the back of the mount in pencil handwriting (numbers stamped in ink):
"Mr. Joe S. Freitas
Danville Calif
3 of this
5-814 4
5-814 5
5-814 6"
This indicates to me that the print was taken to a photography studio and a request made for three reprints. The first letter of the surname resembles a "P" more than an "F' but the alternative spelling doesn't make sense.I believe this photo depicts a husband and wife pair who appear in a Public Member Tree posted on ancestry.com, albeit under the surname spelled "Frates."I choose to spell the surname as "Freitas," although I really don't know which is correct (one of their sons signed his WWI draft registration card Joseph Silva Frates).
Joseph Silveira/Silva Freitas, born 15 Aug 1855 in the Azores, Portugal (immigrated 1875), died 14 Mar 1926 in CA, was a farmer. In about 1886, he married Annie Pereira, born about 1859 in the Azores, Portugal (immigrated 1879), died 17 May 1942 in Castro Valley, Alameda Co., CA.The couple is listed in the 1900 Census data for Supervisors District 2, Contra Costa Co., CA; the 1910 Census data for Township 4 (resided on Sycamore Valley Road), Contra Costa Co., CA; and the 1920 Census data forDanville Township, Judicial District 4, Sycamore School District (resided on Sycamore Valley Road), Contra Costa Co., CA.Joseph is also listed in the 1880 Census data for Washington Township, Alameda Co., CA.Joseph and Annie had five children (all born in CA): Manuel S. Freitas (1888-1914), Mary M. Freitas (1889-1963), Joseph Silva Freitas (1892-1966), William Silva Freitas (1894-1969), and George Silva Freitas (1895-1983).
