My maternal grandfather, Patrick Friel, came to Philadelphia from Ireland with his new bride, Hanna McFadden, in the late 1890's.He was well into his 30's, & ten to fifteen years older than his wife, having remained a bacheor in his parent's house to help support the family until all his sisters had been married off.I recall his birthday as being in December, & Hanna's in the early spring, probably in April. My grandmother was a skilled dressmaker, & I think my grandfather worked in construction as a laborer.Patrick died in Phiadelphia in the 1930's, before 1938, & Hanna died in Phiadephia in 1954 or 1955.They were buried from the cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul, their parish church, within walking distance of their home on North Street in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. My grandmother had two female relatives living nearby, Mary & Margaret, who I remember as being her sisters, both unmarried & twins.
My grandparents produced a total of 13 children, one of whom was stillborn, one who died at the age of two, & one, the oldest daughter, who died in the great flu epidemic of 1917, along with her young husband & their firstborn infant. The names of the offspring who survived to adulthood, all born in Philadelphia before 1920, were (roughly in birth-order) Helen, James, John, Joseph, Charles, Daniel, Marie, Anna Elizabeth (called "Nancy", born 11/15/07 or '09), Catherine, Frances, & Elizabeth ("Betty").
Son John Friel had a career as a detective with the Philadelphia police department, lived in west Philadelphia with his wife, Hannah, & their several children, one of whom was also named John, & was killed in the Korean war about 1952.
Daughter Marie Friel married a man named Richard Dempsey, & lived in Delaware County with their several sons & daughters, one of whom was named Willis & another named Richard.
Daughter Catherine Friel married Joe Munao, & they had one child, Mary Lou, who was born about 1930.Many years later, Catherine remarried to a man named Joe Murphy.
In 1936, Nancy Friel married Alvin Mehl, a labor leader who headed the Philadelphia Steamfitters local union from the 1920's until his death in April, 1955.They had three daughters, Beverly (born 9/23/37), Nancy Jayne (born 12/26/38), & Janice Lorraine (born 4/15/43).
Nancy Friel Mehl moved to Florida, Miami & then Boca Raton, in 1956, along with her youngest daughter, Janice, who married a man named Joe Jeffries & still lives in Miami.Nancy Friel's oldest daughter, Beverly, married Ray Pannbacker, moved to Fort Lauderdale about 1960, & then moved from Lauderdale to Arizona within the last couple of years. Her middle daughter, Nancy Mehl, graduated from Roxborough High school 6/56, stayed in Philadelphia to attend the U. of PA, & married a man named Harry Rodman Allen 11/23/57.
Daughter Janice has two children, Tamara & Gregory Jeffries, who still live in Florida. Daughter Beverly had three children, Andrew & Jan Pannbacker, who now live with her in Arizona, & Eric Pannbacker, who died about a year ago. Daughter Nancy Allen still lives just outside Philadelphia, & has one daughter, Cindy Allen Humphrey (born 12/28/58), who lives in Beverly Hills, & another daughter, Elizabeth Allen Bevenour (born 1/12/64, who lives in Blue Bell, PA.
This is all I know of my Friel relatives.
