In 1865, my great grandfather, Dr. George Washington Benton, bought a Plantation on Port Royal Island, Beaufort Co., SC.He moved there from Jacksonville FL along with his wife Eliza, and two sons Sidney and Clarence (my grandfather).
In 1881, Sidney married Anna "Sissy" Ellis, daughter of Dr. Edmund Eugene Ellis of Beaufort Co.They had no children of their own, but did adopt one Nellie Hazel, she being born August 1891.
Rosa died in 1904 and Sidney in 1907. Their portion of the George Benton estate was left to Nellie with the provision that it shall be her home for the rest of her life and of any offspring she may have.
About 1915, Nellie married Robert Fripp, born about 1874 in SC.This according to the 1930 US Census, Beaufort, Beaufort Co., SC, District 10, online image 10 of 30.
This census record show three children of the couple; Naomi, Ruth and Walter. However, through legal proceedings in a 1950 court order concerning the ownership of the Port Royal property, it was established that Nellie "had no issue of her body."Therefore, the three children must have been adopted since Robert was not married before Nellie.
Robert was born about 1874 in SC.He was a truck farmer on the 80 acre property called CAVU.
Nellie sold the property in 1947.She was still living in 1950.
Anyone living in the Beaufort area might want to check on the details of these folks.I'd be intrested to know what became of them.
