To the best of my knowledge there are no references yet found to any Fugates, by any of the various spellings, earlier than the 1600's. Counting spouses there are only 17 individuals with the Fugate name documented in the 1600's. This is important, as all the Fugates in the America's descend from those seventeen emigrants. Those colonialists are:
James ffugeett "mariner"Stepney, England Eme Lambe ffugeettStepney, wife of James James (2nd) ffugeettStepney, son of James & Eme William ffugeettStepney, son of James & Eme Peter FookettFrance (1645) parents unknown Frances Mould FookettMaryland wife of Peter John FugateMaryland son of Peter & Frances Ann FugateMaryland dau. of Peter & Frances Josias FugateMaryland parents unknown Esther FugateMaryland parents unknown Dorothy Pettit FugateVa. first wife of James ffugeett Martha Poel Fugatesecond wife of James ffugeett Mary Fugate July 24 1698Dau of James & Martha Elizabeth Jan. 13, 1699Dau of James & Martha James Fugate 1676 MarylandFather of Edward 1734 Anne FugateWife of James mother of Edward
There is one other Fugate variant in the 1600's that should be investigated-Peter Foucat Westminster, St. Martin, was christened July 19, 1636 and his parents are Richard and Hestor.
There is no record of the first James ffugeett's death or whether he came to America. His wife Eme shows up here as Eme Johnson, so she remarried either in the Colonies or just before coming here with James her son, born December 18, 1653 in Stepney.
Eme's son William disappears completely after his birth notice in St. Dunstans, Stepney May 23, 1652.
Peter Fookett (Fugate) was born about 1645 probably in France as he named his plantation "Frenchman's Plantation" and he was naturalized by the Baltimore County Assembly September 17, 1681.
Peter married Frances Mould, daughter of John Mould and Anne Posey and they had two known children, John (1689) and Ann (1692) both recorded in St George's Parish records in Baltimore.Peter may have been married to another woman earlier as it seems reasonable "but not proven" that Josias and Esther are also children of Peter.
James (2nd), son of James & Eme was married twice-first to Dorothy Pettit and they probably had no children. He then left Dorothy and moved to Perquiman's Precinct, NC where he married Martha Poel and they had two children Mary born July 24, 1698 and Elizabeth born January 13 1699. (notice these dates as those pesky double dates used back then probably account for the error)
Finally the last James born about 1676 in Baltimore County as calculated from records "age 66" when he took out a "three lifetime lease" in Baltimore County. He married Anne and they had a large family including Edward. Who was his parents?
There are a lot of records in Baltimore County, Perquiman's Precinct and King George County that verify all the Fugates named above and coupled with neighbors and relatives provide a good starting point for DNAand genealogical research. Hopefully re-reading these records and finding new ones can solve some of the mysteries so we don't have to guess or invent relationships.
