Ahhh! Now I am more confused.See, I descend from a guy named Townsend Fugett/Fugitt/Fugate or however they decided to spell it that day.He was married about 1778 to a Malinda Cooper, daughter of Francis Cooper and Ann Abbott. I know from various records that Townsend Fugett was an associate of Daniel Boone, and it looks like he lived with Boone in Yadkin Co NC for a year or so before heading to Kentucky.Townsend Fugate died 1812 in Garrard Co KY. Francis Cooper, father of Mrs. Townsend Fugitt, was the original grantee of a tract of land near Mocassin Creek, near the Clinch River, in SW VA.Francis Cooper sold this land to John Morgan, who had brought a bunch of settlers to the area around 1769.John Morgan in turn sold the land to a William Carr/Karr.William Carr sold it to an agent for Francis Fugate (it is my understanding that Francis Fugate was a "rash" individual, and William Carr would not have sold the land if he knew who the real buyer was).About 1772, Francis Fugate moved his family onto this land, into a cabin that had been built by someone else whose name escapes me just now (Trimble, maybe???).Anyway, once a county commision formed in 1780ish, Trimble (or whomever) filed for the land, and obtained a warrant for it.Francis Fugate was told he had to vacate the cabin and the land, and his reply was that he would die first. He must have been a prophet - November 1781, he was thrown from a horse, and died of his injuries. My problem is that I cannot find Townsend Fugate as the son of anybody, but I am confident he had a brother Benjamin who died in Lord Dunmore's War in 1774, a brother Randolph whose son Reuben (a more than rash individual) married Towsend's daughter Nancy, and at least one sister (whose name I did not know, but I found a brother-in-law who was not a Cooper).I have been contacted by another researcher who is pretty sure her John Fugate (of Castlewood) was also a brother of Townsend Fugett. This has left me with the idea that either Townsend was an assumed name (which I doubt, since I find records of him by time he was in his early twenties),or that Townsend was written out of his father's Will. But then, maybe Martin had a kid who preferred to be called Townsend?? I guess those Fugitives just did not want to be followed, eh?
