Anjou Was Their Land 800 - 1213 AD
Gail, there are about 52 variations in the spelling of the name Fowlkes. The most common way is: Fulk,Fulks, Fults, Fultz, Foulks, Fowlkes and Folks. This surname was derived from the French, Foulques, which means “people Nation.” It is associated with the English and French, meaning “descendent of Foulques”.The name originated about 800 AD in Anjou, France. There was an Archbishop of Reims 883-900, named Fulk.He got involved in politics and lost his head July 27, 900AD.
The Fulk descendants ruled Anjou from about 800 to 1213.In 1213 King John lost Anjou to the French King. The seat of government was at Angers. The Fulkes were known as castles builders. The castle at Angers was burned in 1132.It was rebuilt in 1137 by Geoffrey, son of Fulk V and husband of Matilda, the daughter of Henry, King of England.Geoffrey was known as the handsome Count of Anjou - the son of Fulk V and the ancestor of the English Plantagenet Kings.Fulk V left Anjou in care of his 16 year old son, Geoffrey, in 1129 to become King of Jerusalem. The first castle burned in 1132. Geoffrey built another castle, completed in 1137, is still standing.I was there on a Globus tour in ‘98 and made a picture of the Fulk castle which is in my Chaffin and Hoover’s Gap books.A statement of the Fulks line from Sir Richard (1000) to myself (32 generations), similar to that made on Genform dated May 27, 2001, is in the Liberty Gap and Hoover’s Gap books.During the tour we went to the Catholic Cathedral in Reims where I got a book on Anjou by Rena Polette.I lost it the next year when we went to Norway.
The information you asked about can be found in several books, encyclopedias, Some branches of the Fowlkes Family by David Andrew Sturgill, Roots LTD, etc. I think Congressman Fulks from MO spent thousands of dollars having the Fulks family, his line, traced back to Sir Richard Fowke of Brittany. You might find the book Robert the Burgundian and the Counts of Anjou, Ca. 1025-1098 by W. Scott Jessee very interesting.
There are several Fulk, Fults, Folks, etc. coat-of-arms. The Fulk coat-of arms that the Counts of Anjouused is the official flag flown today over the province of Normandy. It is the cover I plan to use when I publish my Fulks book.
The Fulkes came to England in 1066 with William the Conquer. My ancestor, William Foulks and his brother, Thomas, came to Jamestown in 1620 as indentured servants. Gerrard Fowkes, the rich side of the family, came to VA in 1655 with George Washington’s ancestors and settled in Westmoreland County.
Yes, there was a Guy Fawkes that got into trouble.I think he was a leader in some movement against the King. When I was in London in ‘97, I was given a tour of the castle where Guy Fawkes was held a prisoner and later beheaded or hanged, I can’t remember which.
The above letter is what I sent to another person to answer her questions. The letter Anjou Was Their Land is in the Hoover’s Gap book as a tribute to the Fults family and was sent to a 2nd cousin who I have never meet. She was having a family reunion honoring her deceased father and wonted something to read connect him back several generations if possible. To prove who you are, you must have a will, deed, war records, guardians papers, court record, 1850 census or latter, official document, etc. Hear say or I was told wont do.
Yes, many of the Fults/Fultz came from Germany.Fults and Fultz are the German way of spelling the name. Most of the Germans came to PA and MD. The family originated in Anjou before 800 and they have had trouble spelling it every since.I know some in my family that spells it three different ways.At work and in the mail, I get letter with the name spelled several different ways, if its close, they drop it off at my place.John Fults
