In the last several years there has been a proliferation of Funkhouser and Fankhauser family trees and lineages posted on various websites, especially the Ancestral File with the LDS site and Rootsweb. One should never assume that the information found there is accurate or has been verified and determined to be true. Anyone can post a lineage and many of them were carelessly done. Always check out the source and write or email the person whose work you have found to check where and how they got the data. Many of the lineages that supposedly go back to Hans zum Vanghus in the 1300s have been carelessly put together by using only parish register extracts of Julius Billeter or by using the microfilm of the parish register, which are extremely difficult to read, even for those who have mastered the old Germanic script.Biletter not only extracted births and marriages but he attempted to construct lineages without sufficient data to do so.It is impossible to construct an accurate lineage of Bernese families before 1800, using church records alone. One need to do research in the land and tax records of the parish as well. Very little of that has been done. Also at this point no direct proven links have yet been found between the three Fankhauser/Funkhouser pioneers who were in Virginia by 1737 and their Swiss ancestors.
