George Gaby Jr & Louise Randall NY > IN mid-1800's
I've been looking for info on George W. Gaby Jr.'s second wife, Louise Randall (was this her maiden name?) Their son, Wellington was my grgrgrgrandfather.
I'm trying to separate fact from fiction regarding them. According to family stories from my grgrandmother (still kicking at 91), her mother, Ester Artemesia Gaby (Wellington's daughter), was 1/4 Miami Indian. They were never told much about the Indian connection as it was considered somewhat of a family secret, since Indians were still at that time considered "inferior." Ester, when she talked about it at all, said she had been shunned as a child because she was part Indian.
I know that Ester's other grandmother was not Indian, so I'm left with the assumption that Louise must have been. However, the Miami Indians were from Ohio and Indiana and Louise was supposed to have been born in Vermont. So, was she truly an Indian? If so, what nation? If she was born in VT, which all census records say she was, it's unlikely she could have been Miami Indian. Or did they lie and say she was born in VT to help hide the fact that she was Indian, when she was actually born somewhere else? I've been unable to find the marriage record for her and George - did they marry in NY or OH? I've tried to find info on her, but haven't found anything before the 1850 census, when she had already been married to George for about 15 yrs.
If anyone can help shed light on this, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Lara
