(For background, see Gaddy and Gaddy, "That Our Names May Be Written," pp.121-122, also 388-389.) The fascinating story of Don Merry (1920-1998), born Millard Gaddy, g gs of Confederate soldier Benjamin Gaddy of NC (Co. K, 43rd Regt NCT, d. 1862) closed the chapter on a puzzle of long standinginvolving Don's gf, Stephen, of Anson county, NC, (brother of our g gf, George Washington Gaddy of NC -- not "the Georgia One"), who "went West" some time after the end of the war and was "lost sight of."
Don/Millard's mother, Bessie, was blinded at birth (in AR) and was later placed in an institution in Los Angeles for her care. He was born when she was twenty in 1920, father John Albert Reynolds.
I just came across Bessie (as Bessie Mae Hackett) in the 1920C of Los Angeles, CA, where she is listed, age 19, as an inmate, single. Of interest was that three other Gaddys are listed with her, Aurora, b. c1896; Lilly, c1896; and Mabel, c1896.
Does anyone recognize these three? So far as I am aware, they are not siblings of Bessie. They could help to fill in the path taken by Stephen when he "went West" to seek his fortune after the wartime death of his father -- Bessie, born in Arkansas in 1901 and subsequently in an institution in California. I am also curious about Stephen's life (1858-c1903) and occupation, for he was remembered in the naming of other members of the family back in NC.
