While driving in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co. TX.yesterday,I came across ancemetery named Shook Chapel Methodist Church which had a cemetery located behind it with late 19th centuryheadstones erected and visible from Hwy 154 South towards Yantis.I hopesomeone islooking for this family in North Texas.
From what I've just read on the Gafford board, the name of A J Gafford, 1st Lieutenant, CSAseems to be the progenitor to this line. So, here are several GAFFORDS buried at Shook Methodist ChurchCemetery, located on Hwy 154, ca 3 miles south of Sulphur Springs. The church had a State of Texas Historical marker according to the text,it was a early community to the area settledabout 1889.

Other surnames I came across were Anderson, Beckham, Ferguson, Stone, Ross, Campbell, Jones, Miller to namea few.The cemetery is L shaped lying directly behind the Shook MethodistChurch on the corner of Hwy 154 and a side street. The shorter leg of the L extends on the left side of the church building itself. Was just in the neigborhood visiting from Dallas, (Tx)for the afternoon and became intrigued as to the dates of the older headstones and surnames to be found!
Hope this helps someone!Cheers & Happy Hunting!
