Is anyone out there researching the Gayther family of Bedstone, Shropshire? The surname is variously spelt in the records I have searched so far (Gayther, Gaither, Gaiter, etc).
Robert Gayther (b? d?) m. Martha Tudman (b? d?) Jan 1 1754 Whitchurch, Shropshire. Children: Elizabeth Gayther (bapt. 1756 Whitchurch), Robert Gayther (bapt. 1758 Whitchurch, d. 1828 Bedstone m. Mary Ellis (b. abt. 1767, d. 1823 Bedstone)March 26, 1786 Bedstone), Mary Gayther (bapt. 1761 Whitchurch d.?) and John Gayther (bapt. 1770 Whitchurch d.?.
Robert and Mary had eleven children, all baptised at Bedstone between 1787 and 1812: Thomas, John, Samuel (d. 1824), Robert, Maria, Mary, Richard, Martha, William Henry, George and Ann (d. 1824).
Robert and Mary's son Thomas married Margaret Dodd in 1830 at Hopton Castle and had at least 7 Children, baptised at Bedstone between 1832 and 1850: Mary, Robert, John, Charles, Richard, Elizabeth and Jane.
Robert and Mary's son John (d. 1831 or 1843 - his gravestone is badly damaged) married Martha Bowen (b 1790 at Bucknell? d?) June 15 1820 at Bedstone and had 8 children, all baptised at Bedstone between 1821 and 1830: Mariam, Martha, Charles, John, Caroline, Mary Ann, Jane and Robert.
Robert and Mary's daughter Elizabeth had at least one illegitimate daughter: Maria Margaret Weaver Gayther, baptised in 1818 at Bedstone, who possibly married in England in the 1840s.
Robert and Mary's son William Henry married Sarah Philips at Bedstone in 1832.I have only one son recorded: Edwin, baptised at Bedstone in 1833.
Robert and Mary's son George married Margaret .... (marriage date unknown) and had at least 4 children baptised at Bedstone between 1838 and 1846: Miriam, Elizabeth, Robert and Susanna.
One enigma: by the time the 1881 Census was taken, only one Gayther remained in Shropshire, a certain George, aged 44 (so born abt. 1837)whose place of birth is given as Bedstone.Whose son was he?But the main enigma - where did the rest go? Did they emigrate? If so, where? I am particularly keen to find out when John and Martha's daughter Caroline (baptised in 1827) married. By 1854 she is married to Thomas Trout and living in Lincoln but was he her first husband?
Finally, I think the original Robert was probably that Robert Gater baptised at Wybunbury in Cheshire in 1722, son of Robert Gater (b. 1689 d. 1780?) and Elizabeth Parker. Can anyone confirm or refute this?
