I believe that the John born about 1620 either died unmarried in VA, or returned to England.Consider the following sequence of events and names. 1. 1635 John GATER age 36, Joan GATER age 23, and John GATER age 15 left for Virginia. 2. 1638 John GATER received a patent on 800 acres for transportation of 16 persons [named] that included himself and his "wife" Joane/Jane GATER. 3. 1649 the same [stated in the record] John GATER that received the 1638 patent assigned [sold] this 800 acres with his wife MARY to John GODFREY. 4. 1652 Mary, widow of John GATER is administratrix of his estate in MD.
This shows that the John GATER born ca. 1599 who first married Joan and received the 1638 patent, is the same John GATER who then secondly married Mary and assigned the land in 1649.There is no record of any land being claimed by or for the transportaion of the younger John (b. ca. 1620).The conclusion is that he paid his own trasportation, and either died soon after arriving in VA, or returned to England.
There are records in Lower Norfolk Co., VA where John GATER was administrator of the estate of Henry WATERS (WALTERS) as his "brother-in-law."Whether this is by 1. Henry WATERS being a brother to John GATER's first wife Joan. 2. Henry WATERS being a brother to John GATER's second wife Mary. 3. A wife of Henry WATERS being a sister to John GATER. 4. A wife of Henry WATERS being a sister to Joan. 5. A wife of Henry WATERS being a sister to Mary is unknown.
